In the Middle Ages, which weren’t nearly as dark as we’ve been led to believe, people in most villages had no access to money. Money was something abstract, confined to the circles often carelessly labeled the elite. In the cramped cities with their limited living space and high-frequency trade, money found its way to the common people. Villages, however, operated differently for a long time. People gave away what they had in excess within their own village, because the people of their own village were considered vital to their survival. And rightly so; the village settlement form originated in the defense of the community – against the others.

We were also misled in school about the degree of subjugation to the respective ruler. Back then, one human being only had to work about two days a week for a living; the rest… was leisure, at least until the Calvinists arrived.

A free citizen among the Romans was someone who was allowed to carry weapons in public. This was also true in medieval villages. But there was little reason to do so. In the early cities, people lived together in close quarters. This breeds aggression. The upper class knew this too. Rules were needed, and with so many taverns and traveling people, a curfew had to be enforced. Later this curfew tool was reused again and again, right?

A little less than a thousand years ago, the foundation stone of Cologne Cathedral was laid. After acquiring the relics of the Three Holy Kings, the aim was to establish an important pilgrimage site in northern Europe. Until recently, 20,000 people visited the cathedral daily. Cologne Cathedral was one of the last freely accessible religious buildings; starting in July 2026, the cathedral will charge admission.
But that’s another story.

Today, it seems the motto is: I buy, therefore I am. And this isn’t just about smartphones and wide tires. The constant affirmation of one’s existence in society is derived from the ongoing preoccupation with transfers. Most people aren’t even aware that they are constantly either providers or consumers of services. Need examples? Is the light on in the house right now? Is this text being read on a smartphone? Is the refrigerator running, is the solar panel charging the grid, is the phone company currently selling your personal health data to a pharmaceutical company? Most people pay rent, even when they think they’re doing nothing. The market offers products and someone is profiting from your – organized – inactivity: it’s called a retreat.

The range of options is diverse and quite confusing. The academic view of this process is far removed from the reality of those involved. If business administration acknowledged reality, it wouldn’t exist in its current form. Theory says: the market finds the lowest price for the greatest benefit. Reality says: the provider finds the highest price with the smallest benefit for the buyer. Zero benefit encourages the rapid repetition of the transaction. That’s why they developed fruit that rots from the inside out, so that the customer learns to buy a little more at once.

Less than ten years ago, a member of the European Parliament placed an order worth several billion euros via text message. What can you expect from a psyop who hitches a European idea to repaint the geography of Eurasia?
But that’s another story.

The effort required by the provider shouldn’t be underestimated. Zero benefit with high costs for advertising and contract negotiations isn’t a business. Even the sale of indulgences requires marketing, and that costs money.

I was born in the last millennium. I held the hand of my great-grandmother, who had seen Napoleon and the German King, and later, the first car on the street and the first tram in the city, the first radio in the living room, the first television, and the first person on the moon. 90 years of life in Europe. If you simply reread that sentence, you realize that it’s essentially a matter of belief—the thing about my great-grandmother, and the moon landing even more so.

This whole belief thing is tricky. Colloquially, it probably means that you don’t know something but assume it, and that you can’t, don’t want to, or aren’t allowed to verify it. In many societies, a business transaction between two parties occurs when both believe they have an advantage in concluding it. In Spanish society, one gets the impression that it only happens when both (!) believe they have a greater (!) advantage than the other.

Blackmail isn’t something you get for free. You have to earn it. The tourist offerings on remote islands initially delight the guests, and later the hosts.
But that’s another story.

How do you build a social space without money? As children, we gathered stones, brought firewood and a few potatoes from home, and invited the neighborhood kids over for a bonfire. The biggest potatoes were for those with matches, and that was perfectly fine.

We have been developing La Osa Mayor as a social space since the end of 2025. In the spring of 2026, the focus was primarily on rebuilding and stabilizing the main facade. The majority of the building materials come from the rubble of this former residential building. Old clay bricks are cleaned, shaped, and used as so-called living form-work for the walls. Inside, the space is filled with hard construction debris, mainly concrete fragments and natural stones, as well as Roman concrete.

By June 2026, we had removed more than 15 tons of rubble from La Osa Mayor and reprocessed another 5 tons of building materials for the facade renovation. That’s work time or leisure time, depending on how you look at it. For months we’ve been inviting people to help with this social project. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. on-wards, friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even passersby from the previous week come by. Sometimes we’re alone. Social work can be lonely, especially these days.

Without subsidies, there would be no wind farms. This type of electricity generation isn’t profitable. But that’s not what the cash-strapped pension fund is concerned with. Privatizing profits and socializing losses is their business model, and it promotes the construction of private wind turbines.
But that’s another story.

There’s no business plan, no budget, no intention to make money. La Osa Mayor will be—if it succeeds—an open patio with a kitchen, toilet, and a small stage for live performances, readings, puppet shows, and discussions.

We can contribute many high-quality building materials from our own stock. Reconstructing natural stone houses for 40 years leaves behind quite a collection: doors, windows, reinforcing bars, water pipes, sinks, electrical wiring…

Tile mosaics have been incorporated into the facade. The tiles were either donated to us or left over from other construction sites.

If you make it a principle not to build your own happiness on someone else’s misfortune, then business becomes difficult. Renting the high-quality vacation apartment exclusively to the father of the family also means that he’ll be more concerned with making money than with playing with his own child. Weapons are manufactured for a few liters of fine olive oil, sometimes.

Whether you spray radioactive substances over the residential areas of your own population to study the effects of potential fallout on cancer rates and the strain on the healthcare system, or paint beautiful checkerboard patterns in the blue sky with aluminum salts, all of this costs money, a lot of money. For those who see the world through a crosshair, everything becomes a matter of war.
But that’s another story.

La Osa Mayor is meant to remain a simple project, offering nothing more than a social space. Bringing it to life will be the task and challenge of those who live nearby or who—for whatever reason—pass by.

Social spaces cannot be organized according to business principles. Whether it’s wind power, cultural budgets, or educational work, the redistribution of funds and energy conjures up a myth, but the purpose remains clear: Follow the money!

Those who follow the money will not find La Osa Mayor. They will likely find themselves standing in front of a building whose distinctive features are striking, but whose meaning remains elusive. They will hear the voices of people in the Patio La Osa Mayor who have learned something: Nothing important and valuable can be bought. So why you focused on making money. And buy the way, you are not making it cause you are not in power, you are hunting it, with collateral damage.
